The lunch menu for today is fried rice with mixed vegetables.
The challenge lies on making the fried bowl, made from spring-roll skin. I think I have fried at least 6 or 7 sheets before to get a desired shape. Perhaps I did not do this correctly. The general rule is to place a sheet in a strainer and dip it in hot oil. I believe had dipped it slowly but the skin started to wrinkled and folded toward inside, forming its shape far away from a bowl. In another trial, I had created a bowl with some holes. Ouch..! On last attempt, I have pressed another smaller strainer on top as to get the imagined shape. Aagghh...
So, Jovann gets the bowl and I am too frustrated to re-do a bowl for Luna.
Inside the box is home-made chicken nuggets, star-shaped fish-balls, mandarins and ladybug cherry tomatoes.
It is, too, my first making for ladybugs. The stripes and dots are from nori punch-outs. While the face is from soft white cheese. Black sesame seeds are marking its eyes.
My kids reaction was "eh..? ladybug...?" and rolled their eyes.
I am not sure if their comment was due to fact that they have never seen a ladybug before, or if the tomatoes did not look like ones. Hm....

Never thought to make a wrapper bowl; how creative! And I think the ladybugs look so cute. Very sweet twin bento!
I want this yummy fried rice and cute ladybug. Do you think the twins will share it with me? LOL :D
Landed here from What's For Lunch Wednesday. This is a nice way of making an edible bowl for the fried rice!
@ Sherimiya, thank you for lovely comments.
@ Lia Chen, eerr...i think you are a bit late..there is nothing left in their box ..hahaha *I'm kidding*
@ kidsdreamwork, thank you for your nice comment
Fried rice looks yummy and what a cute lady bug! you've got alot of patience to perfect the bowl! Have you tried baking it? I've baked a tortilla as a bowl before, not sure if it would apply for the spring roll wrapper but you can sure try! crumble up a foil into a ball, place on cookie sheet, lay tortilla (in your case is spring roll wrapper) over the foil ball and adjust it to look like an upside down bowl, then pop it in the oven and bake until crisp.
I love the ladybugs. Kids can be such critics, ha ha! And that's a very creative idea to make the fried rice 'cups'. Sorry it was not working that way you had hoped. :)
Agreed, love the idea of a deep fried wrapper made with spring roll skin! Like a taco bowl...yummy...
And it does look like a ladybug :)
Hahhaa.... cooking can be so challenging at times huh? That's why I try not to do complicated stuff else it will sure to drain my mood!
MAybe you can try freezing the spring roll skin after you have shaped them and fry them while they are still frozen? Not sure if that will work!?! :P
@ Mrs. P, thank you for your visit, nice comments and helpful suggestion! I will try to bake it someday *still very curious* ha ha
@ Sonoma bento, he he yes, they are.
But I love their honesty (although it "hurts" sometimes hahaha) Thanks for your supporting comment.
@ notabrownbag, thanks a lot, Mils, for your lovely comment and your visit too!
@ Angeleyes, thanks for your comment and suggestion.. hehehe..I'll do it again when I am in a right mood. Not sure if frozen skin will work, but I imagine the skin should be defrosted right after it touches hot oil. Wouldn't it create oil sparks? no worry, I'll find the way :-)
